American actress Nia Long and son Massai Dorsey Jr have drowned in Canada in what police are calling a “case of misadventure”.
The accident took place at Lake Ontario, Canadian province of Ontario, according to Police statement.
The United States Embassy representative reported to family members that Nia Long and her song, Massai Jr, were fishing on May 3, when Nia fell into the water. She was in distress and Massai Jr jumped into the water to assist her. According to the Embassy rep, both were pulled from the water but could not be resuscitated.
According to reports, the water was a punishing 35 degrees Fahrenheit at the time, only slightly above freezing.
Family members report no funeral arrangements are set, as officials of Canada and the U.S Embassy process the accident.
Nia Long, 48, Massai, 18, were avid outdoor enthusiasts and according to their Canadian host, they were on a two-week vacation.
Nia known for her roles in the television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Third Watch and Empire, and the films Boyz n the Hood, Friday, Love Jones, Soul Food, In Too Deep, The Best Man, Big Momma’s House and Are We There Yet?.
Massai Jr had announced few days ago on social media that he has been admitted into Eastern Kentucky University as a student athlete. “I‘m extremely excited to announce that I have officially committed to Eastern Kentucky University. I would like to thank my coaches at EKU, my trainers, mentors, friends, teammates and parents for helping me accomplish my goals as a student athlete. GO COLONELS,” he posted.
An average of 289 people drown in Canada each year while recreating in, on or near the water.
Lake Ontario, where the incident took place, is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is surrounded on the north, west, and southwest by the Canadian province of Ontario, and on the south and east by the American state of New York, whose water boundaries meet in the middle of the lake.
